You are traveling in China and you discover that you can purchase $10,000 worth of product at $10 a piece and $1000 in shipping fees to get 1000 products back to the U.S. so you can sell them. You want to build a Web site and sell these items that you believe will sell like hot cakes for $100 each.
Problem is, you do not want to run a shipping business and since you are buying the products direct from the manufacturer, you can’t drop ship. What do you do? If you are okay passing on about 20% of your profits, you can use a fulfillment company. They will unpack, shelve, process orders, box up and ship your product for you. All you have to do is send them the order (you can have this automated with your Web site) and they do the rest.
Talk about a hands off business. Your total costs are $1000 for the shipping, $500 to set up a Web site and $500 to get your fulfillment company paid and ready to start shipping your product. Let’s also spend $1000 in advertising so you don’t have those products sitting on the shelves. You have 1000 items that will sell for about $100 each so when you sell all 1000 your total will be $100,000 Now deduct 20% for the cost of using a fulfillment company which brings us to $80,000. Now deduct the cost of inventory ($10,000), shipping ($1,000), stocking fee ($500), and website ($500) and add another $1000 for advertising and miscellaneous business expenses and you have a total of $13,000 to deduct. Leaving you with $67,000 for about 1 week’s worth of work.
